There are several options when it comes to choosing the best generator for your home and our specialty is helping you make the most educated decision to find the right system for your needs.
If you choose to move forward with getting a generator, we will come to your home and help you choose the best brand for your home. In the meantime, here is some history and information on the generator products currently available:
KOHLER Co. has been manufacturing generators since 1920. KOHLER offers reliable and quiet home generators that are also safe for all of the appliances in your home, including the sensitive controls of energy efficient heating systems, TV’s, computers and pellet stoves.
KOHLER Power Systems also offer load control for homes that have power hungry appliances like central air conditioning, electric stoves and electric dryers. Load control allows you to support your entire home while managing larger power consumption appliances so that you may remain in a “residentially” sized standby generator. (A huge help to keeping costs down!) Kohler currently offers residential generators in the following sizes: 8kW / 10kW / 12kW/ 14kW / 20kW / 38kW / 48kW / 60kW
BRIGGS & STRATTON
Briggs & Stratton has been manufacturing engines since 1908. They are currently the leading producer of engines for 8 out of 10 of America’s most popular power equipment. Like Kohler, they are American made. Briggs & Stratton private labels a generator line for GE, which is why their generator branding has become synonymous with each other.
The GE 8kW and 10kW have the smallest standby generator footprint of their class and are a great economical backup power solution for a smaller home or to just cover the essential items in a home. The Briggs & Stratton 16kW is a good mid-grade generator that can handle the loads of smaller to medium size homes.
Depending on the size, GE and Briggs & Stratton generators come with a comprehensive 4-5 year warranty and have options for automatic load management. The following sizes are currently available for homes: 8kW / 10kW / 13kW / 17kW / 20kW
Generac has been manufacturing residential standby generators since 1989 and is known for offering economically priced generators in a variety of sizes.
Generac generators are private labeled with many other names including: Guardian, Siemens and Honeywell. Generac also has options for automatic load management available.
Current Generac sizes available: 8kW / 11kW / 14kW / 17kW / 20kW
CUMMINS / ONAN
In 1926, Onan Corporation manufactured its first generator set with its intended use being for summer cottages. Onan was actually the official supplier of generator sets to the armed forces in WWII. In 1985, Onan merged with the Cummins Corporation. It was a natural relationship since Onan had been using Cummins engines in their generators for years.
Cummins generators are known for their quality and reliability. Although typically on the more expensive side for residential generators, their reputation makes them a good generator solution for homes looking for a reliable backup power source.
Cummins residential generators come in two sizes: 13kW & 20kW
